Intro-images or thumbnails not well placed by "Latest News Timeline"

We are using Joomla 3.3.6 (and try to keep up with the latest version).

We have 2 places to put thumbnail images in an article:
1. in the tab "Images and links" in "Intro Image" (attached file Timeline_DifferentLocations_ImagesLinks.png )
2. in the Content: first paragraph (= intro or teaser) before the "Read more" button.
Unfortunately method 1° results in a thumbnail above the header while with the latter the picture is nicely placed left & below the header (see file Timeline_DifferentLocations_Thumbnails.png)
Is there a way to put the thumbnails defined as "Intro Image" not above the header but on the left site just as the image in the 1°paragraph of the content ?
